A Brief History

James Manning Greer used to own a 200-acre farm called The Blakely Place, it was on this site where the present Greer is located. He traded a few acres of the farm to the railroad and later sold the rest of his land to W.T. Shumate who later sold the lots when the latter realized the potential for a town around the train station.

Greer owed its creation to the Southern railroad which was finished in 1873. In 1876, the town was incorporated as ‘Greers,’ the “s” disappeared sometime in the early part of the century. Textile mills and agricultural products are among the first to fuel Greer’s commerce. Greer remains a center of business in the Upstate region today.
